SALT LAKE CITY (Oct. 7, 2024) — As Hurricane Milton approaches the Florida’s west coast, seven American Red Cross of Utah disaster relief volunteers are deploying to Orlando today. This is the second significant hurricane expected to impact Florida in recent weeks. Red Cross teams nationwide are mobilizing, with supplies and personnel positioned to respond swiftly following the storm’s anticipated landfall on Wednesday.

The rapidly intensifying Hurricane Milton is predicted to reach major hurricane status. Utah volunteers are joining over 2,000 Red Cross workers already assisting communities in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. These areas are still recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, which severely damaged homes and roads, and displaced countless residents.

“Our volunteers are stepping up once again, providing critical support as Florida braces for another major hurricane,” said Michael Smauldon, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Utah & Southwest Wyoming Chapter. “Their unwavering commitment is evident as they drop everything to help communities in need.”

Strategic Positioning of Volunteers and Supplies

The Red Cross is strategically deploying supplies, vehicles and volunteer relief workers in Florida to ensure a swift response after Hurricane Milton impacts the region. Coordination with local partners and emergency responders is ongoing to support evacuation centers.

As of mid-September, the nation has already experienced 20 billion-dollar disasters this year, including a record- breaking number of tornadoes, catastrophic flooding, devastating wildfires and extreme heat across the country. To meet the needs of families and communities impacted by these relentless disasters, the Red Cross continues to expand its response capacity.

Urgent Call for Disaster Shelter Volunteers

The Red Cross of Utah urgently seeks volunteers willing to assist with emergency shelters and disaster relief efforts this fall. The ongoing recovery from Hurricane Helene and the preparations for Hurricane Milton has demonstrated the critical need for support. Volunteers are currently managing shelters across the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida, providing meals and emotional support and distributing supplies.

Prospective volunteers should sign up at redcross.org/volunteer. Candidates must complete required training and commit to a two-week deployment. Those without disaster experience but with skills in supervision, management, or organization, and a strong desire to help, are encouraged to sign up.
