A 60-year-old man was arrested Thursday in Iron County after reportedly speeding past a Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) trooper who was already traveling at 100 mph on Interstate-15
The driver, identified as Kevin Robinson, now faces charges of reckless driving and failure to stop at the command of a police officer, following the incident that occurred near mile marker 99.
According to the charging documents filed in support of the arrest, the UHP trooper was in pursuit of another vehicle on southbound I-15 when Robinson passed him at a high rate of speed.
The trooper, who already had his emergency lights activated and was traveling at 100 mph, stated in the affidavit that Robinson’s vehicle overtook him on the right.
“I was up to 100 mph with my lights on when this vehicle passed me on the right,” the trooper wrote in the affidavit. “I turned on my siren and followed the vehicle. I clocked the vehicle up to 114 mph.”
Robinson’s vehicle continued to travel at high speeds and even passed a dump truck on the right shoulder a few miles later, the affidavit states.
Despite the dangerous maneuvering, the driver eventually began to slow down near mile marker 95, momentarily reducing speed as if to stop. However, Robinson reportedly resumed traveling at a high speed, refusing to pull over.
The pursuit ended near Exit 82, when Robinson finally pulled his vehicle over just past the underpass. The trooper approached the vehicle and took Robinson into custody without further incident.
Robinson was later booked into Iron County Jail Thursday, where he faces one third-degree felony count of failure to stop at the command of police and one class B misdemeanor count of reckless driving.
As of 2022, under Utah law, driving at speeds of 105 mph or greater is punishable as reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor, and speeding citations in excess of 100 mph carry enhanced fines.
Robinson’s reckless driving charge stems from his dangerous maneuvers on I-15, including passing vehicles on the shoulder and exceeding the 100 mph threshold.
There were no injuries reported in connection with the chase, and no additional information regarding Robinson’s behavior or the reasons for his excessive speed were released at the time of the report.
