— The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has named its cemetery under construction in Cedar City, Utah, the Southern Utah National Cemetery. The facility will serve 14,906 Veterans and their families in the greater Cedar City and St. George communities who will now have a VA burial option within 75 miles of their home.

“We are pleased to expand burial access for Veterans in the Southern Utah region and provide them with a final resting place in honor of their service to our nation,” said Acting Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Ronald Walters.

The name Southern Utah National Cemetery was selected after VA solicited input from local Veterans and community leaders, and is consistent with the requirements in Title 38 United States Code § 531 requiring VA property to be named for the geographic area in which the facility is located. The cemetery is expected to open for burials in the Fall 2025 and will offer casket burials as well as options for placing cremations in-ground or in an above-ground columbarium niche.

Southern Utah National Cemetery is a part of NCA’s Rural Initiative, which provides burial access for Veterans not currently served by a national cemetery located either within the state or nearby in an adjacent state, or by a VA grant-funded state cemetery. NCA has opened Rural Initiative national cemeteries in Yellowstone, Montana (2014), Fargo, North Dakota (2019), Buhl, Idaho (2020), Jonesboro, Maine (2020), Cheyenne, Wyoming (2020) and Harshaw, Wisconsin (2020).

VA operates 155 national cemeteries and 34 soldiers’ lots and monument sites across the nation. Over 5.4 million people — including 4.1 million Veterans from the Revolutionary War to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan — are buried in VA national cemeteries.
