It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Richard Peck on October 25, 2024, at the age of 73. Born on June 6, 1951, to Gertrude Marie Wagner and James Cecil Peck, James was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He resided in Southern California for much of his life, where he earned a master’s degree in education from USC and found one of his greatest joys working as an academic counselor at the University of Southern California School of Fine Arts. His passion for guiding students was evident in his dedication and warmth. James and Brenda later retired to Enoch, Utah, where he continued to touch the lives of those around him.

James instilled the love of camping and the great outdoors in his children. A memorable quote of his is, “even the worst day camping is better than the best day at home.” He was skilled at playing classical pieces on the piano; his favorite composer was Beethoven. He also played the French horn in his college band. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing, golfing, riding his motorcycle, and running his own real estate company. His family fondly remembers him as someone who was happiest with a chocolate malt, football on the TV, and his wife by his side.

A man of faith, James joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about two years ago. Earlier this year, he and Brenda were sealed in the Cedar City Temple, a testament to their enduring love and commitment.

After a courageous three-month battle with illness, James passed away at home, with his daughter and wife by his side. The nurses who cared for him affectionately knew him as “Jay Dog,” a nickname that speaks to the friendly and approachable man he was.

James is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Brenda Lee Wuest, and their cherished children: Brian (Jessica), Stephanie, Rachel (Adam), Charlotte (Derek), and Gregory. He was the proud grandfather of ten grandchildren who lovingly called him “Grumpa.” James was preceded in death by his son, Richard Wagner.

James’s legacy is one of love, kindness, and a life well-lived. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

“His Lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.’”
