Saturday evening saw what appears to be an assassination attempt on former President Trump during his rally in Pennsylvania. The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. MST, while Trump was addressing a large crowd. A series of popping sounds rang out, prompting the former president to reach for his ear and duck behind the podium. His bodyguards quickly moved to shield him, and the crowd also ducked for cover.
After a few tense moments, Trump stood up, still surrounded by his security detail, and pumped his fist in the air. He had a visible wound on the top of his ear, which was bleeding, but it did not appear to be a serious injury. He was then escorted off the stage.
At this time, the identity of the shooter and their motives remain unknown.
Update: at 5:30PM news outlets reported that the shooter has been killed and at least one audience member has died with one other in critical condition.
Update: at 6:50PM in a statement released by President Trump he confirms he was indeed shot in the upper right ear by a bullet but is ok. He offers his condolences to the family of the victim who was killed and the other who was injured. The Secret Service just reported there was a second audience member injured. Nothing more is known about the shooter at this time other than he has been killed.
Update: The FBI has confirmed they are investigating this as an assassination attempt. The shooter has been identified as 20 year old Thomas Crooks of Pennsylvania.
