Lucinda “Cindy” Bunting Mitchell, 79, of Cedar City, Utah, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2026. She was born on July 25, 1947, in Cedar City, Utah to Adrian Oman Bunting and Jean MacFarlane Bunting.
Cindy married Steven Elmo Mitchell on September 16, 1966, in Cedar City, Utah. Together they built a life centered around family, friendship, and the activities they enjoyed. Steven preceded her in death on October 31, 2018.
She earned her associate’s degree from the College of Southern Utah. During her working years, she was employed by Mullett Jewelry. She was the Legal Assistant for R. L. Gardner as City Attorney and when he became Legal Counsel at So UT State College. She finished her career as the Assistant Director of Human Resources at SUU.
She enjoyed snow skiing, water skiing, softball, golf, and playing the piano. Cindy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and played the piano at Sunday service. She Co-Chaired the Mrs. Iron County Pageant and directed the State Fair Pageant with Linda Wilson for several years. She also helped coordinate the opening ceremonies for the Utah Summer Games. Lastly, Cindy held multiple positions within the Cedar Ridge Ladies Golf League.
Cindy enjoyed multiple family trips to Lake Powell every year, weekend vacations at the family cabin in Brian Head, and more recently, family trips with her kids and grandchildren to fun destinations like Newport Beach, Park City, Mexico, and the Bahamas. Cindy also loved hosting her annual Christmas Eve party over the last 40 years, which included everyone on both sides of the family as well as friends and neighbors. It was common to have more than 40 people singing Christmas carols while Cindy played the piano late into the evening.
Cindy’s life revolved around her unconditional love for her three children and six grandchildren. She was selfless with her time and energy right to the very end. She was truly the best mom and Nana we kids could ask for. Whatever her kids were involved in growing up, Cindy was always present and supported them in their sports and hobbies. She also enjoyed visiting her grandchildren in San Francisco, Las Vegas and Park City. She was always generous with her time to babysit her grandchildren whenever she had the chance. The memories she created with them will be cherished for years to come.
She is survived by her children, Jason (Stephanie) Mitchell of Henderson, Nevada; Jarod Mitchell of Park City, Utah; and Jordan (Justin) Cornelius of Kanarraville, Utah; and her six grandchildren, which were the light of her life, Sarah and Kennedy (Jason’s), Jaden and Degan (Jarod’s) and Reed and Bailee (Jordan’s); and her sisters, Brenda (John Ilnicki) Bunting of Haleiwa, Hawaii, Debra Bunting of Hurricane, Utah, and Teri (Jeff) Peterson of Cedar City, Utah.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adrian and Jean Bunting; her husband, Steven Mitchell; and her infant daughter, Stacy Mitchell.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and caregivers at Our House Assisted Living, and to Ethan Bunker and the staff at Mission Hospice for their love, care and support.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 14, 2026 at 11:00 am at the Cove Ward Chapel (95 N 2125 W, Cedar City, UT 84720). Friends and family may attend viewing services on Sunday, September 13, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Southern Utah Mortuary (190 N 300 W, Cedar City, Utah 84720) and Monday, September 14, from 9:30 – 10:30 am at the chapel prior to the funeral.
