Ian James Howells, beloved son, father, husband, brother, nephew, and cousin passed away October 23, 2025. Ian was a natural leader, kind and patient with a broad smile that welcomed others to him. He pursued his life with infectious enthusiasm that helped others to often exceed their own expectations.
Ian was born March 4, 1982 in Cedar City. He attended Cedar City schools and graduated from Cedar High in 2000. He began competitive swimming in middle school and was a 4-year member of the championship Cedar High swim team. He earned a B.S. from Colorado State University in Fort Collins in 2004. His passion while at CSU was road cycling and he competed with the CSU cycling club. Many of his high school swim team and college cycling partners remained friends throughout his life.
While an undergraduate, Ian joined the Navigators college Christian ministry which he said changed his life course. He worked 3 summers at the Navigators Eagle Lake camp near Woodland Park, CO, where he met his future wife, Camille Williams. They were married April 22, 2006.
Ian decided his life path was to help others. He earned a B.S.N. in Nursing in 2008 and went on to earn a Masters in Healthcare Administration. His career path led him through several positions, and culminated with a lead position with Intermountain Health.
Ian had a deep love of the outdoors first nurtured by his Mom and Dad in the wild country of southwest Utah. He went on many camping trips with his Boy Scout troop, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout at 16. He loved mountain biking, was a skilled backcountry and downhill skier, and was a whitewater kayaker, kayaking the entire Grand Canyon at 17. His love for the outdoors remained with him throughout his life. He found joy in biking single track trails in the Colorado mountains, hiking with his children, and family camping in the high country.
Ian recognized people’s gifts and challenged them to become their best selves. His enthusiasm for everything in his life was undeniable and he encouraged his friends and co-workers to join him in reaching for higher goals. He was welcomed into his in-laws’ family and became a close friend to all.
Ian was steady and consistent. He was gentle and courageous. He was humble and driven. His feet were firmly planted and his heart was in the right place – he pursued those he loved with all his heart, an inch better every day. Above all, Ian was a hero for his two beautiful children and a champion for his family.
He is survived by his wife Camille and their two children, Mae and Henry, his mother, Jeanine, father, Jim, and his brother Colin.
We’re heartbroken by his loss, but infinitely grateful for his life.
A celebration of Ian’s life will be held at Community Presbyterian Church (2279 N Wedgewood Lane, Cedar City, UT 84721) on Saturday, January 10. Doors open at 10:30a, service begins at 11am.
We welcome all who loved him to attend.
