The USA West Square Dance Convention was in full swing in Cedar City, Utah, from August 5-8, 2026. The four-day event welcomed more than 500 registered dancers from across the western United States and Canada for performances, workshops, and social dancing. The festival was held at the Heritage Center, marking the first time the convention has been hosted in Cedar City.
The USA West Square Dance organization has 327 active members throughout the western United States and Canada.
Square dancing brings together eight dancers who follow a series of universal English calls, making it possible for participants from around the world to dance together. According to caller Patrick Matthews, square dancing is “friendship set to music.” Listening closely to the caller and responding instantly keeps the mind sharp, provides a welcome escape from everyday stress, and offers excellent exercise. During an energetic session, dancers can easily walk the equivalent of several miles while enjoying the music and camaraderie.
Square dancing also has deep historical roots in Utah. During the pioneer era, after setting up camp for the night, many of the early settlers gathered to square dance, strengthening friendships and lifting spirits after long days of travel.
Today, Cedar City continues that tradition with both an adult club and a youth club that meet weekly. The adult group dances every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Cedar City Aquatic Center. The youth group meets at the LDS Church located at Highway 56 and 4050 West.
