Facing Cal Baptist in its Western Athletic Conference opener, the SUU soccer team dropped a 5-1 match on the road late Saturday night.
The match was even early, as both teams registered four shots each in the opening 18 minutes but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Cal Baptist would break through shortly after, however, taking the 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
SUU wouldn’t trail for long, with Sarah Assumma finding the equalizer. In the 32nd minute, Assumma took a pass from Yui Fujii and fired a left-footed shot to the far corner past the Lancers’ goalkeeper to make it 1-1.

The match remained even for around 10 minutes, and it appeared the two teams would head to the halftime break deadlocked.
Instead, Cal Baptist regained the lead in the 42nd minute and took a 2-1 lead into the break.
Second half
The Lancers pulled away in the second half, scoring goals in the 50th, 64th, and 90th minutes.
Southern Utah had no answer to the Lancers’ onslaught, ultimately falling 5-1 in the conference opener for both teams.
“CBU made us pay for lapses in attack and on defense. All you can do after a game like this is control what you can control. We will watch the film and refocus on the details. The difference today was winning moments, and we didn’t have enough of them,” SUU head coach Kai Edwards said of the loss.
“We have a really good Seattle U and UVU coming to town next week, so we have no time to sulk. We pull up our bootstraps and get ready to go again. This group will be ready,” he added.
