Southern Utah is currently facing several significant wildfires, with the closest being the “Little Twist” fire, which ignited on Thursday, June 13, 2024. As of July 7th, four weeks later, the fire remains only 40% contained and has spread across approximately 5,096 acres. The Little Twist fire is burning in Beaver County, near the Iron and Piute County lines.
Another major wildfire, the “Silver King” fire, broke out on Friday, June 5th, in the northern end of Piute County, about 8 miles west of Marysvale. In just two days, the fire consumed 10,823 acres and remains at 0% containment. This fire is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike. Representative Carl Albrecht visited the area taking to Facebook to update his constituents yesterday afternoon.
“Just attended a briefing on the fire in Piute county, near Marysvale. It’s very erratic with these winds. I would ask us all to say a prayer for the firefighters and the citizens of the town and Piute County. They have ordered more support in equipment and manpower, including super scooper aircraft. Gov Cox and all his emergency folks were on scene coordinating with the Forest Service, and State Fire folks. The Sherrif, Mayor, and County commissioners are all working together. Please keep the folks there in your thoughts and prayers.”
The most recent fire, the “Deer Creek” fire, started on Sunday, July 7th, in Kane County. Within less than 24 hours, the fire had grown to over 9,000 acres. Currently burning on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, it is not considered a threat to populated areas. The cause of this fire is still unknown.
