CEDAR CITY – Iron Sports Academy, Cedar City’s newest gym, has opened doors in its new downtown location.
Located at 141 N. Main St., Iron Sports Academy is part gym, part athletic training facility. Iron Sports Academy is divided into Iron CrossFit, a gym and workout facility, and Iron Baseball Academy, focusing on pitching and hitting training for those looking to increase their skills.
The owners of Iron Sports Academy, Jace Oliverson and Tycen PoVey both have backgrounds in physical education and training. Oliverson is from Cedar City and PoVey moved to St. George from Ogden when he got married.
“Together they train and teach those looking to have an advantage over the competition,” new gym member John Lisonbee said.
PoVey, who has been playing professional baseball for four years, said that they wanted to offer Cedar City a baseball academy because he knew that a lot of kids in the area didn’t have that kind of training available to them.
Iron CrossFit is a fitness and training program used by gyms and trainers across the nation. CrossFit uses training and fitness routines and techniques from a broad range of sports and puts them to use on everyone from the average person to the highly trained athlete. Workouts include everything from weight lifting, pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups, running, rowing, jumping and several other isometric and aerobic workouts.
PoVey stressed that most of the people doing the CrossFit program in their gym are not athletes.
“I’ve been doing CrossFit training for two years now and I will not train any other way,” PoVey said.
PoVey said the CrossFit program differs from other gyms in that there is a set up program and you always have a personal trainer on hand to help.
Besides the Iron CrossFit gym there is also a baseball academy set up in the facility.
“The facility here is very nice due to the fact that there are fully trained professionals that can teach proper batting and pitching skills for baseball players of all ages,” Lisonbee said.
In addition to the CrossFit training equipment, which includes weights, pull up bars, rowing machines and other equipment, the baseball facility also offers a soft-toss station; a state of the art, four camera setup that allows players to work on their pitching and hitting techniques; a 50-foot Iron Mike Pitching Machine station; a 70-foot live hitting and pitching batting cage; and purchasable equipment for baseball, Lisonbee said.
“I’m just a new member that really believes this is a great new business to our community,” Lisonbee said.
PoVey said they had already had more than 50 people sign up for new memberships in about a week. Iron Sports Academy members pay by the month and there are no contracts, he said.
PoVey and Oliverson said they are offering free workouts at Iron CrossFit every Saturday in February. For more information, contact them at ironcrossfit@gmail.com.
