“It’s hard to replace the good guys,” Canyon View head baseball coach Jason Jacobson said, “but we have some strong starters who are underclassmen to build on.”
Last season saw the Falcons take the Region 9 championships only to lose out to Salem Hills and Wasatch at state.
This season sees the Falcons with three seniors, and plenty of underclassmen looking to step up for the team.
“Zane Affleck is only a junior and has started since he was a freshman,” Jacobson said. “And there are plenty of other players like that. Jason Holmes is going to be a good pitcher, and he’s a junior, and Cameron King is another and Jake Dedrick is another. We have a strong foundation.”
Whereas last year’s team revolved around star Mike Dedrick, this year brings more of a team effort.
Last season, Canyon View managed to fly under the radar for most of the season, only striking back in the regional playoffs with a victory against Cedar. This year they may not have that luxury as every team in Region 9 will be aiming to take them down as reigning regional champs.
“I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t perform as well this year as we did before,” Jacobson said.
The Falcons are also known for the amount of service they give back to the community. Between fundraisers to help local families in need and camps to support local youth players, Canyon View baseball is a team that people will see a lot of outside the baseball diamond.
“It’s good to be back and ready to play,” Jacobson said. “I’m very excited.”
