Hard to believe, but the 2017 calendar has already turned to May. That means warmer weather – although one doesn’t always know for certain when it changes around these parts – graduations, and high-school playoff time.

As your public service, here’s a quick primer on what’s going on.

Soccer and 2A baseball start their march toward championship titles this week. Canyon View soccer takes its 13-game winning streak – tied with 2A school Millard for longest in the state – into the 3A playoff opener Thursday against the Union Cougars, the No. 4 seed from Region 10.

Last season, the Falcons made history by winning a playoff game for the first time. Head coach Spencer Davis admitted the 2-1 victory over crosstown rival Cedar took the energy out of them as they dropped a 3-1 game at home to Logan in the quarterfinals.

There are no such issues this time around, and the Falcons are well-adjusted to what it will take to make a deep playoff run. Even with the added pressure that’s come from a No. 1 ranking by the Deseret News, Davis said it’s given the team a benchmark that’s clearly added to the motivation.

When it comes to doing what it takes to be successful, comedic actor Steve Martin said in a 2015 interview with Charlie Rose, “be so good, they can’t ignore you.” Canyon View’s soccer team has clearly arrived and they know they have as good a shot as the rest of the favorites in the field to be at Rio Tinto Stadium on May 13.

On the baseball side, Enterprise finished a game behind Beaver and Kanab as the No. 3 seed from 2A South. The Wolves open defense of its state title against either Manti or Delta on Saturday at Gunnison.

As 3A baseball heads to its final week, Canyon View has won eight in a row and has a simple mission, needing only to beat Juab twice in this week’s three-game series to claim the Region 12 title and host the first-round pod in the playoffs that begin next Saturday.

After struggling to find its offense and dropping the region opener in a seventh-inning heartbreaker at Richfield on April 5, the Falcons are averaging more than 11 runs per game in its winning streak.

On the softball side, Cedar has been swinging the bat with enough ferocity to make the Incredible Hulk look tame. The Lady Reds hit eight home runs – all with runners on base – in two big routs last week and are in firm control of their fate.

Cedar leads Desert Hills by one game with two remaining, including a showdown between the teams at the Thunder’s home field Friday. If DH wins and pulls even with the Lady Reds to share the Region 9 crown, a coin flip will be needed to determine who stays home to host in the first round of the 3A playoffs next Saturday.

Across town, Canyon View heads to the final week tied with the North Sanpete Hawks for second place in Region 12 at 4-3 with a game remaining. Both teams play their final game against Juab, who has allowed just four runs in six region wins.

If the potential tiebreaker puts the Falcons in as the No. 3 seed, they will open the 3A playoffs against either Desert Hills or Cedar – the second-place finisher from Region 9 – at the home of the Region 10 champion. If CV is No. 2, that opponent becomes Region 9’s No. 3 – either Snow Canyon or Hurricane – and that game would be played at the Region 11 champ.

Parowan softball finished the regular season tied with Kanab for third in 2A South with a 5-5 record. With the tiebreaker still to be determined, the Rams will open the 2A playoffs at Spanish Fork on May 11 against Manti, South Summit or South Sevier.
