The Canyon View Falcons reached another milestone in a season that’s been loaded full of them so far. When the referee’s whistle sounded for the end of its game against Carbon on April 18, there was no extra celebration, no student section to greet the team.

It may have been the middle of spring break, but the Falcons know they have bigger goals that are fast approaching.

Trevan Wade, Tyler Wheeler and Mark Gibson all scored goals and the defense made sure to slam the door as Canyon View blanked Carbon 3-0 to clinch the Region 12 crown for the second year in a row. Not only did the Falcons secure the No. 1 seed and home games for the first two rounds of the 3A playoffs, but they won their 11th straight game overall (11-2).

“This is awesome, but it’s just one step forward for the goals we want to achieve,” CV head coach Spencer Davis said. “Keeping the focus of teenage boys is hard, but they’re doing a beautiful job.”

The match was played in a stiff breeze throughout with wind gusts that topped 40 mph, but it didn’t slow the Falcons down. Wade, a junior, scored the only goal of the first half, while Wheeler made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half and Gibson drove a low rolling shot inside the near post in the 57th minute to finish off the scoring.

It was CV’s second straight shutout and sixth of the season for goalkeeper Matt Bench. Fifteen different players have scored at least one goal for the Falcons with two regular-season games still to be played.

Canyon View closes the regular season with a road game at Richfield that was played Tuesday and Juab at home Friday in a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. The Falcons will face the No. 4 seed from Region 10 in the opening round of the 3A playoffs that begin May 4.

Cedar falls to Dixie, still in playoff hunt

Like their crosstown counterparts, Cedar played only one soccer game for the week of spring break, but came out on the short end of a 2-1 loss to the Dixie Flyers at home April 18.

The Redmen (1-6-1 Region 9) got a first-half goal from Abe Brower that held up until the Flyers got second-half tallies from Jose Morales and Kian Rocha to rally for the win.

With road games at Pine View and Desert Hills left in the regular season this week, the Redmen can control their fate in the race for the final 3A playoff spot from Region 9. Cedar would move ahead of the Panthers (2-6) with a victory in the game that was played Tuesday night.

The Redmen wrap up the regular season against the Thunder on Friday.

Also from the week, the Parowan Rams produced a win and a tie in 2A South play. The Rams lost to Delta at home April 18 by a 4-1 count, then traveled to Beaver two days later and played to a 3-3 tie.

Parowan (1-9-1 2A South) closes the regular season with a road game at Diamond Ranch on Thursday.
