SUU students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to share their thoughts about global warming during last week’s Pizza and Politics, held at the Leavitt Center in the Sharwan Smith Student Center.

To provide some background for the topic, a few simplified videos about carbon emissions were shown. Then the discussion was started with a question: Are your day to day actions going to significantly reduce mankind’s carbon footprint, or should we be more concerned about big policy changes?

A few students spoke up in favor of policy changes and some said that policy changes will only happen when the public demands them. Another spoke up advocating for more education and small changes.

Leaders of the discussion then asked the audience whether climate change was primarily due to human activity or the natural climate cycle.

A professor spoke up, explaining that fluctuation in temperature is natural within certain limits, and the main concern is actually the increase in the rate of that change due to human activity.

Then the audience was presented with information found from NASA in support of the fact that it is indeed the rate of fluctuation in the climate that is of concern. After showing this information, the audience was asked about media’s possible influence on the views of climate change.

One student wondered why the public doesn’t see debates between scientists on the issue, and another spoke up about possible political or financial agendas that may affect what ideas get publicized.

To end the discussion, leaders asked whether it would be good or bad to move away from fossil fuels and encouraged those in attendance to continue the conversation outside of the Pizza and Politics setting.
