Social media can cause rumors to spread more quickly than any other format, and Iron County School District officials felt the heat today as a rumor of discrimination spread on a local Facebook forum.

At least one student claimed that Canyon View High School officials announced that only “traditional, male and female couples” would be able to buy tickets for Prom. CVHS Principal Rich Nielsen denied this claim and said he is unsure of how the rumor started.

“That is blatantly not true,” Nielsen said. “We would have no idea (of their sexual orientation). The only conditions that are in place for any dance, which has always been the case for any of our high schools, is that the students that are attending are of high-school age.”

Nielsen said he contacted the administrators of the forums on which the posts appeared and asked that they remove the information as it was not factual. Those posts have since disappeared.

“There is no way – In the world,” Nielsen said, “we would restrict our dances to heterosexual couples only.”
