As the thousands upon thousands of people in Cedar City saw at the Utah Summer Games Opening Ceremonies last week, our governor, Gary Herbert, loves Southern Utah and is highly dedicated and invested in our rural area.

We wish to thank him for that. Having gotten to work very closely and very hard at the Utah Legislature with Gov. Herbert for several years now, we both can say without hesitation that he is one of the finest men we know, and we both give him our full support in his re-election.

Once in a while there are the rare few who, without any basis in fact, complain that the governor ignores Southern Utah. One thing we both love about reason and fact is it clears away the noise, and shows the truth.

The truth is Gov. Herbert, along with the exhausting burden he carries with his responsibilities as governor, makes certain to visit every single county in our entire state, a total of 29 counties, and he does this every single year, often multiple times. Think of the time, dedication and investment that action alone would take, let alone someone who leads the greatest state in the nation.

But most importantly, Gov. Herbert proves his dedication with the excellent work he has done and continues to do to improve Iron County. Southern Utah University continues to grow with the support of the governor, including his help to fund the new business building on campus and the magnificent art center. He also helped bring about the new and expanded Southwest Applied Technology College building and program in Cedar.

Gov. Herbert's leadership has brought about a surge in those getting their college or technical degrees. One example of many: Gov. Herbert just last year implemented the Utah Aerospace Pathways pilot program in our high schools, including in the Iron County School District, so that a high school student can graduate with their certificate in aerospace manufacturing. With Syberjet and similar businesses that want to locate in our county, Gov. Herbert is helping provide an educated, skilled work force to fill those jobs.

When the governor had to choose a lieutenant governor, he picked someone from rural Utah, Spencer Cox, who understands the issues important to each one of us who live south of the Wasatch Front. When the governor needed to choose a chief of staff, he again looked to rural Utah and hired Justin Harding, a native of Cedar City and a proud SUU graduate.

Gov. Herbert aggressively stands up for rural Utah against the expanding federal government. He has relentlessly fought the damage wild horses are causing to our grazing lands by the federal government, and against the federal overreach regarding prairie dogs. The governor is fighting the Forest Service who stands silently by while our trees and our timber industry suffers, and the list goes on and on.

We each need to carefully choose who we have lead us, because the strength of an entity almost always can be seen in the strength of who is leading it. Utah is nationally recognized as having one of the strongest economies in the nation. Utah has been named the best state in the nation for business and careers, along with having one of the lowest unemployment rates nationally. Utah was also chosen as one of the best managed states in the nation. This is all under Gov. Herbert's leadership. He has accomplished great things for us.

Gov. Herbert has proven time and again he loves Southern Utah and champions our way of life, and what we value and hold dear. We need him and his continued leadership as our governor.
