CEDAR CITY – Southern Utah University’s Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery opened a new exhibit, “ABC: Assemblage, Book Art, Collage,” with a sneak preview event Sept. 9. The exhibit opened to the public Sept. 10 and will continue through Nov. 7. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibit is co-curated by local book artist Sue Cotter, Deborah Snider, an associate professor of Art Education at SUU, and Jonathan Talbot, a New York-based internationally acclaimed collagist. It features the work of 52 artists from around the world and also includes seven artworks from the University of Utah’s collection of Book Art, displayed in the Gerald R. Sherratt Library at SUU, Snider said.

At first glance, “ABC: Assemblage, Book Art, Collage” is a treat to the eyes and it becomes immediately apparent this is not your traditional museum exhibit. The art media used to produce the pieces on display vary from written text on pages of a book to scrap metal, beads and material commonly found in an ordinary junk drawer. The various media combine to form uniquely interesting and diverse pieces of art that invoke thoughtful questioning and curiosity about the stories behind the works and their meaning.

Yet despite the diversity, the exhibit has an undeniable cohesiveness and is brought together by the multimedia nature of each of the pieces and the overlapping of techniques and ideas used in assemblage, book art and collage.

“They complement each other, but they do cross over,” Cotter said of the three art forms. “I do collage that incorporates text and tells a story; I do assemblage that usually has a little book as part of the piece, so I cross over a lot and obviously these artists cross over that category line a lot. They all complement each other and work together.”

“I wanted to show the variety of what’s being done,” added Cotter, who was primarily responsible for reaching out to the book artist community for contributions to the exhibit. “There’s really no limit to what you can do.”

The gallery’s fall hours are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. Library exhibition hours are Monday to Thursday from 7 a.m. to midnight, Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 10 p.m. For more information about “ABC: Assemblage, Book Art, Collage,” call (435) 586-5432.
