Gateway presents ‘We Are Monsters’

“If help and salvation are to come, they can only come from the children, for the children are the makers of men.” – Maria Montessori

Last week, the afterschool drama club at Gateway Academy presented “We Are Monsters.” It was a hilarious sketch about monsters wanting to be friends with humans. The students did a wonderful job being werewolves, vampires and various other monsters. We are very proud of them for a job well done.

The Lego Robotics club of Gateway Academy, the “Sparke Walles,” won the Champion’s Award at the SUU Qualifying Tournament on Jan. 17. The team demonstrated core values, presented its project and competed in the robot games.

The students also qualified to compete at the University of Utah at the state championship in a couple of weeks.

We had a wonderful school fundraiser at IHOP this last week. Thank you to those who participated and to IHOP for being such great supporters of Gateway Academy.

East to attend state LEGO tournament

East Elementary would like to congratulate the school science team “The Lego Legends” on qualifying for the State First LEGO League Tournament. We are thrilled the Lego Legends will be representing East Elementary and Southern Utah at this competition.

The Lego Legends impressed the judges and referees at SUU on Jan. 17 with their robotic skills. The team members’ quick thinking and ability to work together helped them to achieve victory in the end. The team faced the challenges of the day together, and the challenges were not always easy.

When their robot lost its programs at the beginning of the second round, the Lego Legends cheered each other on and competed as well as they could. They worked together on the robot’s memory loss, rallied in the third round and ended up tying for first place in the Robot Game.

The Lego Legends will compete with almost 50 other teams from across Utah in the Utah FLL Tournament at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on Jan. 31. We know they will do their best. We are proud of you, Lego Legends. Congratulations and good luck.

Enoch prepares for annual spelling bee

Enoch Elementary third, fourth and fifth grade students recently finished up the mid-year interim testing that correlates with our end-of-year SAGE tests. Mid-year academic growth was measured with this assessment. The students each did a wonderful job and teachers were pleased.

Our annual school spelling bee pre-test to determine participants from each classroom will take place on Feb. 12. The actual competition will take place in the gym on Feb. 19.

This is a wonderful event and our school appreciates the efforts of PTA member Mrs. Jeanette Shumway. She puts a lot of time and energy into making this a fantastic opportunity for the students. The teachers love to see the excitement for spelling as students prepare to participate in the spelling bee each year.

We will also have a lunchtime club for the spellers as they prepare for competition. Participation in the lunchtime activities is optional.

Iron Springs focuses on responsibility

At Iron Springs we’d like to give a big shout out and congratulations to our LEGO robotics team. SUU hosted a regional competition on Jan. 17 and did really well. The Iron Springs LEGO My Eggo team placed sixth in the robot games, tied for third on high point rounds in the robot games, and took home the best project award.

Great job to these wonderful students: Bennett Morton, Jake Hunter, McKade Spencer, Lacy Rodgers, Jarrid Stoklosa, Skyler Steele, Rylan Bulloch, and Ethan Child as well as their coaches Natalie Clark and Tim Roberts.

In December, we focused on the character trait responsibility. We'd like to congratulate the following students who were nominated by their teacher for showing responsibility: Brynlie South, Ella DeMille, Megan Wilson, Cash Chandler, Mackennah Porter, Emmi Duncan, Wyatt Greenhalgh, Avery Rudd, Mia Hatch, Trace Oveson, Easton Albrecht, Halle Barnes, Lizzy Arnell, Cassidy Kartchner, Isabela Pete, Owen Mayes, Sebastian Marquez, Brooklyn Cox, Dallin DeMille, Lizzy Liljenquist, Nick Shrope, Cadence Shukait, and Kaden Gilbert!

Three Peaks holds auditions for musical

The Three Peaks Science Ambassadors participated in the First LEGO League competition at Southern Utah University on Jan. 17. The team won the Robot Performance Award and earned an exemplary mark in most of the rubric categories.

We are so proud of the professional manner in which they participated in all areas of the competition and the positive way they represented our school. Way to go, Bre W., Carmen B., Courtney H., Addy P., Hallie H., Tyler B., BoDee B., Tyson P., and Jake O.

Three Peaks had auditions for the next school play called, “Pirates, the Musical!” We had 83 students participate and we can’t wait to view this awesome production. Southern Utah University volleyball athletes and “Thor” visited our school to talk about the importance of reading.

Each student will choose a reading goal and once it is accomplished, the student will attend an athletic event of his or her choice. Thank you SUU for your continued support of ICSD schools.
