To the Editor:

Promote the virtues and traits we already have, keep the people in charge not the lobbyists!

On Saturday (Sept. 21) I had the opportunity of attending a State Central Committee as part of the Republican Party Leadership.

During the meeting, much attention was given to yet another proposal to attempt to address concerns by the group known as Buy my vote. Were there concerns legitimate, no I don’t believe so. Were they sincerely trying to get a resolution to their concerns, absolutely not!

It seems like the political elites want to continue to hammer this point that Republicans are stopping and preventing people from getting more involved. This is a false narrative based on an absolute lie that has been perpetuated by the political ruling class elite in Washington, D.C., that’s been dutifully reported by an all-too-willing-to-comply media.

With the caucus system you cannot possibly be more involved. The caucus system allowed me, a 24-year-old punk kid, to get involved and participate. I served as vice-chair for my county party for one year and later sought election and became chairman for the Iron County Republican Party.

What wasn’t mentioned by the media is that I was the one who made the motion to postpone indefinitely and fighting the proposal. Now why does some punk 24-year-old kid from rural Utah care? I will not support any effort which dilutes the power given to grassroots Utahan’s. This proposal did just that!

Even if you are not elected as a delegate, a precinct leader, etc. the caucus system allows you to have a neighbor close by who is. You can call them, knock and their door and communicate with them on as frequent of a basis as you wish.

They in turn can contact their congressman, senators, and other public office holders to provide feedback and ask questions on behalf of you and your neighbors. The caucus system is absolutely crucial to the successes of our state and without it power brokers and lobbyists will rule.

I urge everyone in Utah, please get involved! You don’t need to spend 20 hours a week but please do not sign the buy my vote ballot initiative and please warn your neighbors as well. If we allow these DC power brokers to buy our right to vote, we will never again get it back.

I urge you with all possible caution to not sign this initiative, get involved, get informed and keep the grassroots or every day Utahans in charge of who elects and decides who our public officials will be.

If you don’t know how or what to do to get involved, feel free to contact me at I will be happy to help you find your local leadership and put you in touch with how you can make a difference to keep the caucus system in Utah. It’s going to take everyone’s help to keep this.

Blake Cozzens

Chairman, Iron County Republican Party
