The team went to the state championship meet with a lot of confidence – a confidence that doesn’t come to a lot of teams and was well deserved. The Falcons took second place in 3A state, competing against the state’s top athletes.
The team results were great for Canyon View, but the individuals who did great at state were something to see as well. Canyon View took home three state championships after the final 3A state meets last season.
Yoshi Scott took home the state title in the javelin and received the Overall Most Outstanding 3A Track and Field Athlete of the State for spring 2011. Matt Wright and Ben Doolin also took home first place prizes as they too took state in the 3200 meter and shot put.
The bad news for Canyon View is that all three of last year’s state champs were seniors. Along with the three, CV lost a lot of other great athletes to graduation last year. That’s not to say that the team brings back zero talent, however.
Kolton Knighton and Scott Callister both return this season and placed high in the region events, giving Canyon View some leadership in that area.
The girls’ team also did well, placing fourth at the region meets and bringing back some of its young talented athletes like Melissa Kunz this year.
The outlook looks positive for Canyon View and the community can find out this week. The Canyon View Decathlon Championship was Monday (results were unavailable at press deadline) and the Falcons compete Friday at the All-Comers Meet.
