POCATELLO, Idaho – The big weekend for Kalei Watkins continued Saturday afternoon as the Southern Utah softball team wrapped up a three-game series with Idaho State with a 4-0 shutout win over the Bengals.
The freshman started the game in the circle for the Thunderbirds and threw seven shutout innings allowing just four hits and striking out three Bengals in the process.
Watkins also went 3-for-3 at the plate with three doubles, a run scored, and a RBI. She hit her first double in the first inning to make it 2-0 early after Taylei Williams hit a RBI triple in the previous at bat.
The Thunderbirds scored again in the fourth inning, as Samantha Guerra used an infield single to bring home Watkins from third base. Southern Utah made it 4-0 in the sixth inning as Skyler Ball, who was pinch running for Watkins who had doubled earlier in the inning, was brought home on a RBI single from her twin sister Makenzie Ball.
Makenzie Ball was 2-for-2 on the day with that RBI.
In all, Watkins went 8-for-10 in the series with five doubles, three runs scored, and two RBIs.
