T-Birds edge USU in soccer opener

CEDAR CITY- The Southern Utah soccer team hosted the Utah State Aggies Friday afternoon for a preseason exhibition match and used a late goal by Ellee Layton to earn the 1-0 victory.

The teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first half with the Aggies outshooting the Thunderbirds 3-2. Brianna Aldridge made her first save in goal with a Thunderbird jersey at the 12 minute mark on a shot from USU’s Karstyn Peterson. Danielle Meuret and Devri Hartle took the two shots for the Thunderbirds in the first half.

The Aggies came out firing in the second half, rattling off seven shots before the Thunderbirds took their first one of the half. With about five minutes left to play, Layton sent her second shot of the half up and over the Aggies’ goalkeeper and into the top left corner of the goal to put SUU up 1-0. Hartle was credited with the assist on the goal after she sent a pass from the top of the box to Layton, allowing her to score.

The Thunderbirds were able to keep the Aggies off the board for the remainder of the game and secure the 1-0 win. Rian Kasner made three saves in the second half after replacing Aldridge in goal for the final 15 minutes.

The Thunderbirds will open the regular season next weekend in East Lansing, Michigan against Michigan State.
