For the third year in a row, Snow Canyon and Cedar National needed an extra game to settle who would be champion for the Utah All-Star Tournament at Veterans Park.

Snow Canyon got the pitching when it mattered and rallied to claim its second trip to the West Regional in the last three seasons.

Landon Frei threw a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts, and the Snow Canyon juniors pulled away late for a 7-0 shutout win July 15 that secured the tournament title. SC scored five runs in the sixth inning of the opener and forced a second game with a 12-7 victory.

“We knew (Cedar National) had a good pitcher working in that second game,” Snow Canyon head coach Ben Shakespeare said. “We saw him for a few pitches Thursday, and he closed us out in that game.”

Snow Canyon led only 2-0 after four innings in Game 2, but was able to break the game open down the stretch. In Game 1, Cedar National led 6-5, but SC took the lead for good on a two-run homer from Braxton Hickman in the fourth inning. Carsten Herman had the big hit in Snow Canyon’s game-clinching rally in the sixth with a bases-clearing double.

Snow Canyon will open the Junior League West Regional on July 31 in San Jose, Calif., against a team from Hawaii starting at Noon. Follow along with the tournament online at and clicking on “Junior League Baseball” under the “All Tournaments” tab.
