PAROWAN – With first place in Region 18 on the line, the Parowan Rams may have been a little nervous as they saw the Millard Eagles starting to heat up its long-range shooting.
Freshman Max Topham and senior Porter Wood helped restore order as the Rams continued on their rocket-like ride of winning momentum.
The pair combined for all of the points in a clinching 14-2 run over the final five minutes, and Parowan beat Millard 49-34 on Jan. 26 for its seventh straight win overall. The sixth win in a row in Region 18 play moved the Rams to 6-2, a half-game in front of the Eagles and Beaver Beavers with two weeks left in the regular season.
“We’re competing and not rolling over,” Parowan coach Lance Stubbs said. “Since the Hodson (Classic), we’ve made our turn and come together as a team. We’re not going to quit.”
The Rams led 33-20 as the fourth quarter started, but Millard opened the period with a 12-2 run that included a pair of 3-pointers and forced Stubbs to call a timeout with 5:05 left. The Eagles found themselves within 35-32 and riding a serious momentum wave.
Enter Topham, baseline left. The Rams’ defense followed soon after.
On the first possession following the timeout, Topham drained a 3-pointer from the left corner that doubled the lead back to six, and it would be all Parowan from there. Wood would score the final nine points in a row for the Rams on the way to 19 for the game.
“They ran their press and we started panicking a little bit, not closing out on shooters,” said Topham, who played in all three games (freshman, junior varsity, varsity) and finished with 12 points. “Coach told us we have to keep our heads and get stops.
“We’re playing together as a team, figuring out our roles a little more, and we’re grinding.”
To begin the week, Parowan fell behind 13-2 after a quarter, but outscored Kanab 25-10 in the fourth to rally for a 50-44 victory over the Cowboys to keep its winning streak alive. Wood led the way with 33 points and five 3-pointers for the Rams.
Parowan will travel to North Sevier for a 7 p.m. tipoff tonight, then come home to play Gunnison on Friday, also at 7 p.m.
