Football Challenge Series announced

For Iron County Today

Southern Utah’s matchup with the University of Northern Iowa on September 16 is now part of a brand new Challenge Series between the Big Sky Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference.

Both conferences made the announcement on Aug. 15. In total, there will be eight games in the challenge, starting with five on September 9. The agreement was made in an effort to publicize current matchups and promote further non-conference scheduling between the conferences.

Over the last four seasons, members of the two conferences have played 35 times. Between the two leagues there are nine representatives in the STATS FCS top-25 preseason rankings.

“The Big Sky and Missouri Valley Football Conferences have a great history of football success,” says Andrea Williams, Commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, in a release. “It was important to both leagues to highlight and promote the outstanding achievements of our players, coaches and programs. This year will be no different, with top teams in the country meeting in great non-conference matchups.”

“The history of games between these two great FCS conferences is long and strong and it’s wonderful to give these games even more significance with this Big Sky/MVFC Challenge Series,” said Patty Viverito, Commissioner of the MVFC.  “Inter-conference FCS match-ups featuring nationally ranked teams make the football season more interesting and meaningful for teams and fans alike.”
