The Dixie majors All-Star baseball team had been doing it all through the Utah All-Star Tournament at Veterans Park, but they knew the goal of starting fast needed to continue with a championship on the line.
With the help of two big innings and a big bat from Kyler Terry, Dixie left little doubt who would be wearing first-place medals at the end of the night.
Terry belted a pair of three-run homers and Dixie scored nine runs in the first inning on the way to a convincing 17-1 rout in four innings over defending champion Snow Canyon in the final game of the Utah All-Star Tournament played last Saturday at Veterans Park.
With one run, already in on an RBI single from Matt McArthur, Parker Andrus drew a walk before Terry unloaded his first big fly over the fence in right-center field to stake Dixie to a 4-0 lead. They loaded the bases later in the inning with two out before Jaxon Barben unloaded a two-run double and McArthur added a two-run single.
Terry capped off the big inning with an RBI single to center and the pitching of Tayven Mortensen did the rest. Snow Canyon scored its only run in the fourth on an RBI groundout from Bo Hickman.
As was the case in the first inning, the first three Dixie batters reached in the third before Terry ripped his second home run – and fourth of the tournament – over the fence in left to extend the lead to 13-0. A perfect symbol of Dixie’s good fortune came later in the inning when Cole DeCastro reached on an infield single that bounced off the first-base bag.
Dixie moves on to the Little League West Regional in San Bernardino, Calif., that starts with a 12:30 p.m. game Aug. 7 against the winner of the matchup between Hawaii and Arizona. The early-round games will be available for viewing on the WatchESPN app, and the semifinals and finals will be carried on ESPN.
