CEDAR CITY—The Art Works Gallery is presenting “His and Hers,” a dual exhibit featuring Spike Ress and Sue Cotter. It opens Sept. 22 and runs through Oct. 21 at the gallery, 16 N. 100 West in Cedar City.
The opening reception takes place on Friday, September 22, from 5-8 p.m.
A former commercial artist, Spike Ress eventually felt the pull of fine art. Devoting weekends and vacations to pursuing his own artistic development, he eventually parted ways with commercial art to pursue painting full-time. He began with a focus on watercolor, and after gaining national acclaim, added oils to his repertoire. Today he works in both. With a preference for landscape subjects, he loves the land and clear light of the American Southwest but the challenge of new subjects in different parts of the world is always rejuvenating.
Ress explains his approach, “No matter where I am, I try to respond with direct honesty to what is before me. It is my aim to capture the way a scene feels, not just the way a scene looks…”
Sue Cotter is a book artist who makes one of a kind and limited edition artist books. In addition, she creates assemblage pieces. Sue resides in Parowan, Utah, where she owns Woodhenge Press, her own letterpress studio. A native of Montana, she earned her B.A. in Art from the University of Nevada, Reno. In 1988 she returned to UNR to study letterpress printing with Robert Blesse at the Black Rock Press, starting her on the path as a book artist.
