Deseret Industries, also known as D.I., an LDS non-profit chain of thrift stores featuring vocational training and donation processing, will open a new retail store on April 20 in Cedar City between Walmart and Home Depot at 1460 S. Providence Center Dr.

The current location at 110 W. 535 South has been in business since Deseret Industries began operating in Cedar City since 1974. A three-day Grand Opening celebration will be April 20 - 22, including a ribbon cutting with city dignitaries, live music, SUU’s Thor the Thunderbird, and giveaways.

“We’re excited to be expanding our presence in the Cedar City area,” Deseret Industries Marketing Manager Brooke Yates said. “We believe area residents will enjoy the new store and larger merchandise offerings, and we’re happy to be able to employ more people in the area.”

The new Cedar City location is approximately 48,000-square-feet and will employ five job coaches and 75 to 80 store associates as part of its career-training program. Associates develop skills and obtain certifications enabling them to advance to permanent, full-time employment in a variety of fields and careers.

“I am super excited for this new store,” Yates said.

The new building will be owned by Deseret Industries, while the current location is leased. The current location has multiple levels and the new location has just one level, which store manager Dave Stephenson said will make a lot of the moving and shopping process a lot easier.

The new building also includes new fixtures, flooring and open shopping space with clean, organized merchandise.

“With every grand opening we bring merchandise from other stores,” Stephenson said.

He said that all the grand openings start preparing six months in advance and that the stuff for this new store has been coming for a year.

“We do have some new stuff that we sell,” Stephenson said. “Beds, some furniture, sheets, towels, socks — stuff that you don’t want people to buy used.”

The mattresses and furniture are made in Salt Lake City and are shipped to the stores. Such items used to be bishop orders, but now they do the orders in the stores to help those in need, he said. No merchandise from the current Deseret Industries will be brought to the new location.

Stephenson said the store staff will try to sell it all before April 15, the last day that location is open. If not the merchandise will be recycled. The associates from the current location will get training and get a tour of the new location on Monday.

Among the things Deseret Industries does to serve is help its associates is offer them a job, all are recommended by a bishop, member or non-member.

“It is really neat to see them grasp and get that confidence in themselves.”

Associates also are given the opportunity to strive for the career they want and receive education and training with payment help from Deseret Industries, as it has access and connections with many government agencies for grants and programs to assist them reach their dreams.

“We want to be a better asset to the community,” Stephenson said. We have been able to help many whether a member or not. We have a lot of community agencies and grants that we can help people.”

He said the store is also a great location where many people go, next to Walmart and Home Depot.

“The community has been a huge support,” Stephenson said.

The Cedar City store hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays. The store is closed Sundays.
