PROVO – The Cedar High girls’ track team placed second overall at the 2015 3A State Track and Field Meet at Brigham Young University May 15-16, finishing with 61.5 points, trailing only Desert Hills (99 points) for top honors. Park City (55 points), Juab (54.5 points) and Richfield (40 points) rounded out the top five teams.

The Cedar girls’ sprint medley team took state with a time of 4:13.98, finishing just ahead of Canyon View with a time of 4:15.64. The Cedar girls’ sprint medley team is comprised of Brooklyn Shakespeare, Holly Carpenter, Rachel Hunt and Whitney Yardley, all of whom are underclassmen. Cedar girls’ track and field coach Josh Bennett said the girls’ sprint medley time shaved about a second and a half off the school record.

In addition, the Cedar girls’ 4x100 relay team placed second with a time of 50.32, just shy of Desert Hills’ time of 49.40; and the girls’ 4x400 relay team placed fifth with a time of 4:13.05.

“We were excited about how our relay (teams) performed,” Bennett said. “We took region, but we knew going into state Desert Hills was going to be a tough team. … We had a goal to win first; obviously we didn’t but we’re still happy.”

Cedar’s Whitney Yardley was the school’s highest placer in individual events, placing third overall in the 800 and seventh in the 1,600. Brooklyn Shakespeare placed fifth in the 100 and seventh in the 200, Rachel Hunt placed fifth in the 400, and Halsey Curry placed sixth in the 1,600 and fifth in the 3,200. In hurdles, Tenille Rhodes and Nicole Stevenson placed seventh and eighth in the 100, respectively, and Samantha Twitchell and Shana Foley placed sixth and seventh in the 300, respectively.

Morgan Myers also placed sixth and seventh in the high jump and long jump events, respectively, while Reagan Hulet placed sixth for Cedar in the discus event.

“This is a young team,” Bennett said. “Of all the girls that qualified for state and competed, I think we only lose two of them and so everyone is back for next year. We’re excited for the future of Cedar track.”
