The Canyon View girls’ basketball team came out as the most successful basketball team in Iron County this season after taking third place at the State Championship.
The tournament at UVU started for the Falcons last Thursday as they faced off against Region 11’s No. 2 team Juan Diego.
Juan Diego managed to get to state with a surprise win over Delta, but couldn’t keep up with the pace of the state competition.
Canyon View jumped ahead of Juan Diego in the first quarter, scoring 17 to the Eagles’ 10. The second half was a near shutout as the Falcons only allowed 2 points while taking 10. After that, it was pretty much over as Cassie Holmes had the game high with 18 points and Tori McGrath with 15.
The next day, the Falcons faced off against returning champion Richfield and fell behind in the first half, netting only 14 to Richfield’s 28. The second half saw Canyon View come alive with an amazing 10-0 run in the third quarter, which evened the score to 32, all with a little more than a minute left in the third.
Unfortunately, that was all they could muster. Richfield closed the game on a 26-14 run with a final score of 58-46. Richfield went on to beat Union to take the championship for the second year in a row.
On Saturday the Falcons played Juab for third place. McGrath took 17 points, including two 3-pointers, and led the team quite easily to a victory with a final score of 35-23.
The third place state victory ends Canyon View’s 17-7 season.
