CEDAR CITY–More than 100 people attended the Rubik’s Cube square dance competition and fundraiser dance to help 14 youngsters participate in the upcoming Utah Square & Round Dance Festival set for May 4 and 5.  The Cedar City-based youth square dancers were named winners by judges, Duane and Bonnie Carter, Associated Square Dance Club of Utah, (ASDCU) Salt Lake City.

Event organizer Patrick Matthews cued dancers in Mainsteam plus and mainstream tips along with Wendy Brooks, who brought her square dance group, Funky Squares, (Ogden) to compete in match-up dances.  The evening was designed to highlight dancers with individual singing ‘calls’ in the competition and to raise funds for youth to participate in the statewide event at the Community Hall in Midway.

According to Matthews, participants included the Hey Cedar Square Dancers, the Sevier Promenade group (Richfield), State Officers, and local families who enjoyed a mix of competitions, a Hex Square six-couple demonstration, raffle, and the popular cake-walk.  The Funky Squares (Ogden) presented their rendition of a ‘Roaring ‘20’s-style dance while Rubik’s Cube featured traditional square dance patterns.

“I’ve worked with many of these young people since they were ‘knee high to a grasshopper’ said Brooks of the Ogden dancers, “And now the oldest of our dancers are getting married, so it’s pretty crazy for me to see all of that change.” The Utah State Square & Round Festival in May will feature caller, Justin Russell and Larry Sperry.

Special guests were Ed and Emma Jo Cadwalter, Secretary, (St. George); Richard and Rosemarie Van Dyke, Southern Utah Representative (Richfield) and Woody and Roberta Woodruff (Toole) Northern Utah Representatives.

The Hey Cedar Square Dancers will hold their annual dance on August 11 featuring plus and mainstream tips with open microphone for both callers and cuers at the Cobble Crest Dance venue in Kanarraville.  Cost is $ 10 per person. The group will also attend the Days of ’47, 4th Annual Square Dance Party on Fri., July 20 and Sat., July 21 at the Washington County Community Center.  Activities are planned all week long.
