CEDAR CITY – Cedar City Junior Ballet has announced auditions for two upcoming productions, “The Puppet-show Man” and “Peter and the Wolf,” on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 pm. They will take place at the CCJB Studio, 173 N. 100 West in Cedar City, and the community is invited to participate.
Roles are available for dancers, ages four to adult. There are also non-dancing roles for children and adults. No dance experience is required to audition. Christine Mills is the director and choreographer.
Based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, “The Puppet-show Man” tells the story of a carnival’s puppeteer who dreams of having his marionette puppet show come to life. He asks the carnival magician to cast a spell and when he does, chaos and fun ensue.
The second show, “Peter and the Wolf,” was written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936 for a Moscow children’s theatre. The popular story tells about a boy named Peter who lives with his grandfather and disobeys his warning to stay away from the dangerous wolves nearby and finds himself face to face with a hungry wolf. This show will also feature a live orchestra, a first for a CCJB production.
Auditions times on Saturday, Sept. 8, are as follows: 10 a.m. – children ages 4 to 7; 11 a.m. – children ages 8 to 12. And 1-2:30 p.m. – youth 13 years of age and older. Children under 13 with pointe shoes should also attend the 1 p.m. time. Rehearsals are held on Saturdays, beginning Oct. 6, with performances on March 8 and 9, 2019, at the Heritage Center Theatre in Cedar City. Performance fees are required to participate.
There are many volunteer opportunities for community members to help too. Please contact CCJB to help with costume or set construction and publicity.
In addition to these auditions and rehearsals, Cedar City Junior Ballet also holds weekly ballet and tap classes for all ages and abilities. They are always open for enrollment, and boys are especially encouraged to enroll. All male ballet class students at CCJB Studio are enrolled tuition-free and show fees for all male performance participants are waived, if needed.
Cedar City Junior Ballet is Cedar City’s only classical ballet company designed to involve community talent of all ages. Past full-length productions include “The Secret Garden,” “The Sleeping Beauty,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Coppelia,” “Cinderella” and “Les Patineurs.” It is funded, in part, by Cedar City RAP tax and generous donations from individuals and local businesses.
