Fire units investigate cause of sudden fire in Cedar City

By Holly Coombs

Cedar City Fire Department reported to the area of 700 N 800 West in Cedar City Monday afternoon on a large fire growing rapidly because of windy and dry conditions.

“Several structures were threatened and several outbuildings were destroyed,” Cedar City Police Sgt. Jerry Womack said in a press release. “The fire included about five acres of grass, old farm buildings and livestock corrals.  No livestock was injured and there have been no injuries to responders.”

At press time, the fire was mostly contained and firefighters continued to “mop up” and extinguish the hot spots.

“They will stay on scene to monitor the area to make sure there are no flare ups,” Womack said. “The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

Resources from Cedar City Fire, Utah State Forestry and State Lands, United States Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management were all involved in the suppression efforts.

Investigation continues with further assessing of the fire and interviewing of witnesses.
