CEDAR CITY–To celebrate Cedar Drug and Gift’s two-year anniversary, owner and pharmacist Rory Smith is hosting a customer appreciation day this Saturday, Aug. 11. The pharmacy is located at 755 S. Main Street in Cedar City.
Smith has been a pharmacist for 15 years, and wanted to open his own pharmacy after working for a larger chain company for more than a decade.
“I always wanted to not be in a corporate environment,” he said. “The small town setting always fit me better and I like being able to spend more time with people, being able to counsel them and take care of them the way I would want to be taken care of as a patient.”
Smith said running a business is something he has had to adjust to.
“It’s been a little bit different for me trying to run a business because I’m trained to be a pharmacist. I’m not trained to be a business guy so I’m still learning,” he said. “Overall I think it’s been really good; we really enjoy being here and having this type of environment to work in. It’s been great.”
Smith attended Southern Utah University for his undergraduate education and then the University of Utah to become a pharmacist, and was always interested in the medical field.
“When school came around it just seemed like a logical area to check out,” he said. “I actually worked for another pharmacy here in town before I got into pharmacy school and liked it.”
He is also excited to have reached the two-year mark with his business.
“I’ve worked almost every day, six days a week, for most of the two years,” he said. “So I think now I can maybe start getting a little more help in here, and maybe I can get a day off to go watch my kids play sports.”
A more personal experience is something Smith hopes will set him apart from other pharmacies, in addition to the flower and gift shop attached to the pharmacy that features ice cream and a soda fountain.
“It’s always nice to have a friendly face that is willing to help you out,” he said. “That is what our goal is, to go a little bit above and beyond what anybody else would.”
He added that he feels Cedar Drug and Gift has filled a niche with bubble packing, a method of preparing medications that has designated spaces for medicines that need to be taken multiple times a day or at a particular time, both for individuals and businesses.
“A couple of businesses that have patients in their facilities (for) long-term care, we’re bubble packing for them,” he said. “A lot of the places are using businesses from outside of Cedar (City), so I hope that ones we haven’t been able to contact yet would consider letting a local place do their bubble packing.”
This method of preparing prescriptions helps avoid mistakes when taking medication and can make the process of taking multiple medications daily easier and less confusing.
Cedar Drug and Gift also offers price-matching, free prescription delivery or mailing and immunizations.
The anniversary celebration and customer service appreciation day will feature knots from Sweet and Knotty and 50 cent ice cream, sodas, floats and hot dogs, this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
