Hazel Luree Sargent Schmutz, age 89, passed away on March 31, 2018 in Cedar City, Utah. Luree was born March 29, 1929 in Cedar City, Utah to David LeRoy Sargent and Mildred Irene Pinnock Sargent. She was the seventh of nine children born to David and Mildred and was raised in a loving home 3 miles north of Cedar City. She spoke fondly of her childhood and loved to share memories of her days on the farm.
She attended public schools in Cedar City, graduating from Cedar High School in 1947. She also spent two years attending Branch Agricultural College, where she met and fell in love with Eldon William Schmutz. They were married on June 14, 1949 in the St. George LDS Temple. Luree was a wonderful support to Eldon in his many responsibilities.
Luree had a love of music and played the bass fiddle in the orchestra throughout high school, college and with the Orchestra of Southern Utah. She always had the “Oldies” playing in her home as she worked and instilled in her family a love for all types of music.
Luree was blessed through her service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many callings, including Stake Relief Society President, as a missionary in Australia and Papua New Guinea and as a Temple Ordinance Worker with Eldon.
Luree was a wonderful example of everything that is good and kind. She was full of grace and dignity. She had many friends and was loved by her nieces and nephews. Most of all Luree was a loving mother and grandmother. She counted her family as her greatest blessing and was happiest when she was surrounded by them. She will be revered, honored and loved by her family for eternity.
Survivors include her children: son Bradford Craig (Elyce), daughter Mary Ellen Westwood (John) and son Eric Jon (Brenda); sister Mildred Cardon; brother Jack Sargent (Jane); 15 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
Luree is preceded in death by her husband Eldon, son Eldon William Schmutz Jr (known as Billy), parents David L. and Mildred, and siblings: Lee, Beth, Dean, Ross, Carol and Elma.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the LDS 17th Ward Chapel located at 256 South 900 West in Cedar City, Utah. Visitations were held on Friday, April 6, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 9 to 10 a.m. at Southern Utah Mortuary located at 190 North 300 West in Cedar City, Utah.
